There are many reasons why it can be beneficial for people to look into decreasing their household waste. A household may be overfilling their bins all too often and will realise that it is time to make a change. Others may be becoming conscious about the environment and will want to do their part, even if it is only a small contribution. Some may be moving to an area where they only supply small rubbish bins and others will simply want to challenge themselves. But whatever the reason for wanting to reduce household waste, there are many simple steps that can be taken to achieve this. For example, less waste is created when purchasing something from a store rather than having it home delivered in a box or wrapping. People can also make small changes such as using their own fabric bags instead of plastic ones when shopping, carrying their own knife and fork in their bags instead of using plastic ones, as well as asking for a receipt to not be printed. While these changes may seem small, if everyone does them and continuously improves upon them, we will begin to notice a positive change.
Focus on buying less packaged foods and goods
One of the most simple ways of reducing household waste is by purchasing less packaged foods and goods. While this does take a little bit of practice and research, soon enough it will become second nature. One way to achieve this is by shopping at farmer’s markets. A farmer’s market is a great place to grab fruits and vegetables that are straight from the farm and are not wrapped in any kind of packaging. Shoppers are able to easily pop them straight into their non-plastic shopping bag and be on their way. Similarly, people can take a glass container to a butcher or farmers market and have their meat put straight into the container rather than buy packaged goods. Families are able to get together and cook things from scratch rather than buying them pre-made, and individuals can reuse packaging where they can e.g. take their old boxes to places like Bunnings where other people can use them.
Reduce the amount you are purchasing
For many people out there, shopping in their form of therapy. While there is nothing wrong with consuming, many people are over consuming. This may be because they are trying to fill a void in their lives or it may be because of the mass amount of advertisements we are exposed to on a daily basis. But whatever the reason may be, it can be a great idea to simply keep an eye on what you are purchasing. Implementing small methods like these is a great way to reduce the amount of waste in a household and to contribute to a larger change.
