The recent and tragic floods that hit NSW’s Northern Rivers region posed a major challenge for many residents and businesses, with some losing everything for the second time in five years.

Thousands of tonnes of rubbish were generated as a result of people’s belongings being destroyed and then placed in the streets.

The clean-up of the majority of the flood rubbish across the Tweed Shire has taken weeks and will continue for many weeks as residents come to terms with this disaster.

An operation of this magnitude was controlled and managed by NSW Public Works.  The task was too large for just one organisation and the Australian Defence Force to handle.

When Solo contacted the command centre to offer assistance, it was immediately accepted, and the Solo crew launched into action, focusing on the devastated area of Chinderah. Solo collected approximately 130 tonnes of flood rubbish in one street alone, using our speciality semi-trailers and trucks loaded by our partners’ excavators and bobcats.

We aided the ADF troops with the provision of rear loaders, which the Army loaded by hand with a team of six soldiers. These young ADF men and women were a joy to work with, and they expressed to our staff how much they valued Solo’s assistance in hot, humid, and challenging conditions. It made their work a whole lot easier.

The clean up will continue for several weeks to come as more flood waste sites are being identified. Solo will continue to engage with the local Council in a community-focused manner, assisting in the clean-up of these sites and restoring the area and its community to the magnificent and beautiful location that it is.

Great effort by all involved.
