How to manage construction waste

construction waste
Published: May 3, 2020

When it comes to construction or demolition, there is always a large amount of bulky waste that needs to be disposed of. Some of this waste may even be hazardous. The type and volume of refuse which is produced by building or demolition cannot be accommodated by regular household waste collections. Big construction companies will always work with a waste management company, such as Solo Resource Recovery, so that this important aspect of their operations is under control. Smaller construction projects, or even household renovations, also require this specialist management service. Even renovating a small part of your house will produce more waste than you might imagine – and this needs to be off your property as soon as possible so you can get back to enjoying your home.

If you are tearing down a building, or even just part of one, you will have timber, concrete, bricks, and tiles which need to be disposed of. Depending on the scope of the project, there may also be green waste such as dirt, plants, and trees which are pulled out. Finally, there is chemical or hazardous waste which results from some older buildings. If you are conducting a home renovation, it is wise to consider when your home was built and therefore what materials you are likely to find within the walls.

Thinking through the above list, you may have realised that some materials can be recycled, others can be re-used, the majority goes to landfill, and some may have to go to specialist processing centres. When it comes to sending a large amount of rubbish to landfill, it advisable to hire a skip bin or bulk bin. At Solo Resource Recovery, we have a large range of different sized bulk bins available for hire. These bins are deposited at the site, and collected by us once full and we take care of processing the contents. The bulk bin should be used only for items which are not recyclable, and which can be sent to landfill. We recommend also hiring another bulk bin which is for recycling only. Speak to us about what materials you will need to dispose of, and we will be able to recommend to you a waste management strategy which maximises recycling of materials wherever possible.

It is important not to place hazardous or dangerous waste into a regular bulk bin which goes to landfill. Any liquid waste, paint, and asbestos will need to be disposed of through dedicated waste processing channels. If you anticipate that this will be encountered in your demolition project, it is best to seek expert advice on handling of these materials as well as how they are to be disposed of. Some hazardous materials can only be handled by specialists who are accredited to do so.

Finally, you may need a green waste collection, particularly if there is a landscaping component of your project. Plant matter should not go to landfill, instead, it can be taken to composting facilities where it is put to good use.
