Four bins that every office needs

office waste
Published: April 5, 2020

Offices produce considerable amounts of waste, which must be dealt with as a regular part of business. You can optimise your waste disposal processes with just a little bit of thought and planning – it is easier than you think. At Solo Resource Recovery, we work with many office-based businesses to make their waste disposal needs easy and efficient.

The vast majority of offices have similar waste disposal requirements. It is not constructive to ignore this and send all waste into landfill. Read on for details of the four types of bin which every office should have.

Firstly, every office needs a cardboard and paper recycling bin. This is slightly different from your regular home recycling bin, in that you would not place glass or plastics in this bin. We recommend having small cardboard and paper recycling bins in convenient places, such as next to the printer and under desks. Making it easy to recycle will encourage your staff to do so. We can provide large sized paper and cardboard only wheelie bins which you may wish to use for the collection of small bins inside the office, or which you could place at heavily trafficked locations.

The second type of bin is an electronic waste bin. Electronic waste, or e-waste for short, is where you would dispose of items such as computers, tablet devices, and mobile phones. Components of these items can usually be recycled, but they have to be sent to the right place for this to happen. In a small office, you might want to dedicate a container for e-waste collection, which you would then regularly deposit to a local facility. For larger offices, it is more efficient to have an e-waste bin which is part of your ongoing waste collection. Speak to us at Solo Resource Recovery for the best e-waste recycling solution for your business.

Thirdly, you would want a small compost bin in staff kitchens. Encourage your staff to dispose of organic waste in the compost bin. Even small offices can reduce their waste to landfill with the use of an organic waste bin. After all, a substantial amount of your waste is generated by the people who inhabit your office, who each day will have food scraps or spent tea bags which could be used productively in compost. You may find that someone in the office wishes to take the compost home for their own garden; otherwise, speak with us at Solo Resource Recovery about organic waste collection options.

Finally, you should have a standard mixed waste to landfill bin. This is the bin which you likely already have, and which you are erroneously sending all sorts of recyclable waste into. You will always need a waste to landfill bin for items which cannot be recycled, but you can greatly reduce the volume with the use of the three types of bin mentioned above.
